Sunfish can be harvested at certain times of the year. Sunset Cabin is a newly remodeled 950 sq ft cottage on the lake. The house has a large deck, central A/C, open floor plan, comfortable living area and 2 bedrooms. The large yard also has a fire pit with beautiful view of the lake. The dock is a great place to fish but also has great access to open water for skiing, tubing and boating. The home is equipped with wifi but options are limited at the lake and it is satellite and not always reliable. Cell phone service is also not always reliable. Located right outside city limits, this private house is only a few miles from downtown Henderson and the shopping areas. With a cabin like feel and all the things you need to be comfortable, this place is perfect for a quick stay or even for a long one. Other things to note, this is just a basic cabin. There are some scuffs, stains and cracks in the linoleum floors, the furniture isn’t super fancy or modern and you may experience an occasional bug that decides to come in with you as this is located outside the city in front of woods. It remained in his family for more than 40 years, during which time the property fell into poor condition. Our family purchased the property in 2018 and began the gradual restoration process. We have worked very hard since we purchased it, and our work will continue for many years to come. It is a creaky old home with strong bones, ample space both indoors and out, and in an unbeatable location, all offered for considerably less than what a family would spend per person for comparable hotel space. It has been updated in keeping with respect for both its age and our modern needs. The kitchen boasts a new stainless GE gas stove/oven and a stainless GE fridge. It has a porcelain farm sink and the floors....while not old....are stained to match the old plank flooring in the rest of the house. There is a comfy living room with a fireplace and DirecTV and fantastic stained glass pieces done by widely acclaimed stained glass artist, Pat Williams. The bedroom has a queen size bed and off this bedroom in the front is a reading room/bunk room with a bunk for ONE extra person...although this little house is more comfortable for one or two people. The bathroom has a slate tile floor and slate tile shower with stained glass in the window of the shower and above the sink. There is a washer and dryer in the event that you need those items. We supply a hair dryer and linens and towels for your needs. We also supply shampoo, soaps, Tide, charcoal for grilling, etc., just like your home. We stock the pantry with condiments and other foodstuffs for your use. There is a lovely patio in the back with a couple of tables and chairs and patio furniture with an umbrella. We have a hot tub (PLEASE...NO lotions at all on your bodies in the hot tub) for your enjoyment and two fire pits and we generally have wood there for them. We ask that you NOT park on the patio as it was not poured to accommodate vehicles. There is also a grill for your outdoor cookouts! Whatever you would like to use at the Little House, please feel free to do so. AND....if you love fresh farm eggs feel free to go into the chicken coop and get some fresh eggs and in the garden behind the little chicken coop, you can pluck some fresh veggies whenever the garden yields its crops. Our big dog, Sadie, will usually camp out in front of the Little House just to make sure you are taken care of. She is an Anatolian Shepherd and was bred to be a livestock guard dog. The breed hails from Turkey and I know she wishes we had much, much colder summers... She is BIG but she is a sweet girl who lays around a lot and makes sure that you are safe and secure. Sadie comes and goes so if she runs out when the gate is open, no worries...she will return. Her territory is bigger than our 25 acres. It is just a lovely little cabin. Please enjoy yourself! It is secluded from the rest of the property and is full of natural light afforded by the large windows. The doors are antique Spanish Colonial with hand forged hinges. As in Gus's Place, we have wonderful stained glass created by regionally acclaimed glass artist, Pat Williams. I think that you will love the very special artistic touches throughout this home. A hot tub is snuggled into a recess in the woods. The walkway from there will take you to the back porch and the propane fired grill is always ready for your own foodie creations. Welcome to the Piney Woods. This is my 2-story brick house. You will find that the lower level houses the living and dining rooms, sitting room, half-bath, full kitchen and laundry/office. It is easy to get a good night's rest upstairs as the upper level has three comfortably furnished bedrooms. Choose from two queen-sized beds and one king-sized bed. For additional sleeping space, the couch pulls out into a full bed. Featuring hardwood floors throughout, the home has separate thermostats for the living areas downstairs and the sleeping areas upstairs. The upstairs thermostat is located in the largest bedroom adjacent to the full bathroom. The downstairs thermostat is located in the living room, just adjacent to the bookshelf. My home is located in a peaceful residential neighborhood with mature trees and quaint homes. The neighbors will be happy to meet you and get to know you. Like in many small towns, Marshall residents are hospitable and kind once they get to know you. Introduce yourself and you might get invited in for a cup of coffee or a soda. Although there are no sidewalks, the streets are not busy, so neighbors take leisurely walks quite commonly. On a nice afternoon, it is not surprising to see several families walking or riding bikes through the streets. You will need a car in Marshall, as there is not a great public transit system. Cycling as a form of transportation may not be very safe, as there are no bike lanes. And I love walking in the neighborhood, both because there is little traffic, and also because you may run in to some of our friendly neighbors. There are several options for getting to Marshall. The Amtrak train has a depot in Marshall, located at 800 North Washington St. This information is accurate when I last checked, but you should verify times and prices when you plan your trip. As of the time I am writing, the train is scheduled to depart towards Longview and Dallas once everyday at 7:50AM. The fare to Dallas is $25 one way and takes approximately 3hrs and 40 minutes. The return trip is scheduled to leave Dallas' Union station at 3:40 PM daily and arrive in Marshall at 7:01PM. It is also possible to get to Marshall by Greyhound bus once daily. It is located at 304 Interstate Hwy 20 E. If you wish to fly to Marshall, you can take a convenient flight to Longview (GGG) or Tyler (TYR), TX or to Shreveport (SHV), LA. These regional airports are about 30 -50 minutes away, with Longview being closest. The last time I checked, American, Delta, Allegiant and United Airlines flew to Shreveport. Only American airlines flies to Tyler. And it appears that American is also the most popular airline to Longview. The local hospital is within 7 minutes walking distance. The local courthouse and square are within 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes drive. Wiley College, East Texas Baptist University and Texas Community College are all a short drive away. Caddo Lake State Park and other state parks are less than an hour away, and afford a wonderful day trip for boating, fishing, hiking, or just relaxing in the Piney Woods. In the Christmas season, enjoy the iconic Wonderland of Lights festival, complete with Santa's workshop, Ice Skating, Clydesdale Horses, festive music and of course, the dazzling Christmas Lights. Remember all of the bedrooms are upstairs, so if you have mobility issues, this needs to be kept in mind. We have taken the extra step of ensuring that our Clean Team disinfects all frequenty touched surfaces, including doornobs, light switches, and handles. And all hard surfaces are also deep cleaned to kill 99.9% of germs. Only 2.4 miles down Highway 21 East from the East Loop 224 and 1.2 miles down CR 509 from the Oldest Town in Texas just off the El Camino Real sits a Two Bedroom one bath Hunters Cabin on a within a fenced game preserve. Black gates on left with white stone columns and automatic coded gate opener. Once in gate turn right down paved driveway to shop on left and park on right side of building in back. Cabin is attached to back of building. This is a fun property and is Great for getting away from the city life, plus only minutes from downtown Nacogdoches and Stephen F. Austin State University. Rustic Hunting Cabin has with two bedrooms. One bedroom consists of two twin beds and the other bedroom has one queen bed. Two hide a sofa beds in game room also great for kids. Furnished kitchen with electric range, microwave, dishwasher, plates, utensils, refrigerator, sink. Game room has pool table and ping pong. Trophy/living room has wood burning fireplace, coach, chairs, dining table. Small bathroom with sink, 3' x 3' shower, and toilet. Porch has outdoor charcoal grill, with chairs and swing overlooking woods and lake. Saddle up bar area with electric fireplace. This is a rustic cabin attached to large shop , concrete parking, paved driveway to hunters cabin attached to back of ranch shop. Hunters Cabin has plenty of rustic character and great views for watching the deer, horses and cows feed thru the woods. Dish network TV. No internet on site but Cell service in area. The Patillo Home, built around 1846 and used primarily for rental property, was named after Trenton A. Patillo, a pioneer lawyer, county judge, and co-founder of the Texas Republican. According to early deed and probate records, the site of the Patillo House was part of the Richardson Addition, one of the oldest sections of Marshall, and owned by Mrs. Lavenia Richardson. Colonial William S. Richardson came from Alabama to Bastrop County, Texas in 1840, and then moved to Marshall with his family in 1842. After he died in 1850, Col. Richardson left his wife Lavenia with one grown son and four daughters. In 1859, when she was unable to secure sufficient funds to meet the bond requirements for the guardianship of her minor children, Trenton A. Patillo was appointed by the Country Court as guardian of the estates of Frances A. and Emily V. Richardson. Eventually Lavenia had to mortgage her homestead and other properties to Mr. Patillo, although she never lost the title to the original 5 acre purchased two of the lots between North Washington Avenue and the Marshall Cemetery on April 18, 1877, from their mother's estate. The Patillo House occupies the south half of this property, while a frame house of identical design occupies the north half. But according to public records, the sisters lived in neither of these houses. After the death of her sister, Mrs. Sanders moved to El Paso and sold her home and the remaining lots of the original 5 acre plot. Although a complete abstract exists on Outlot 27, N-E, it does not show conclusively whether the Patillo House was built by the Richardson sisters or by the subsequent owner, William Hugh Lane. William Hugh Lane, from an Irish immigrant family, came to Harrison County where he established a law practice with Isaac Van Zandt and Judge William B. Ochiltree. According to Deed Records, William Lane purchased the property from J.E. Davis. (Harrison County Deed Records, Vol. 49, Pg. 44, filed May 17, 1902). The Patillo house represents the change that took place in the neighborhood adjacent to the railroad yards after the construction of the Texas and Pacific shops in the early 1970's. In 1963, Commander Hobart Key, Jr., USNR acquired all of Out-lot 27 from Bertha Davis, the widowed wife of J.E. Davis. (Harrison County Deed Records, Vol. 587, Pg. 86, filed June 18, 1963.) The Patillo House is the third Texas Medallion structure to be preserved by Mr. Key, who also owned the Ginocchio Hotel and the Key Log Cabin. The Key family came to East Texas in the 1840's, thirty-seven years after their relative Francis Scott Key, wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner." When Mr. Key purchased the Patillo Home he restored it to its original state. The home staid in the Key family until Thomas Fisher Key and Richard Garrett Key sold it to Wayne and Michelle Fontenot in 2000. (Harrison County Deed Records, Vol. 2146, Pg. 43, filed September 22, 2000.)The Fontenots sold the structure to the current owners Lee H. Hardy Jr. and his wife Carolyn H. in 2003. (Harrison County Deed Records, Vol. 2604, Pg. 139, filed April 14, 2003). It is interesting to note that when the Patillo Home was built, very few people in Marshall lived in brick homes. As late as 1894, it was the only brick residence on North Bolivar Street, according to the Sanborn-Perris Insurance Maps.
